Mandatory retirement at the age of 58 years from the civil government service in India represents a crucial problem for the retired which often experience a sudden change in their roles, income, status and respect. These may have adverse effects on their health leading to a higher risk of mortality during the initial years following retirement. This study focuses on pensioners who left the service at the normal retirement age and uses a new set of data compiled from Pension Payment Orders (PPOs). Government Treasury records. The results of survival analysis revealed that the risk of mortality was relatively high after retirement for those who retired from police service, followed by occupations which involved dealing with the public and administration, as compared to retired from clerical and other similar occupations.
