Administration of zidovudine during late pregnancy and delivery to prevent perinatal HIV transmission--Thailand, 1996-1998

In 1996, the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand and Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, initiated a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of a simpler and less expensive regimen of zidovudine (ZDV) than is currently the recommended standard of care in the USA to prevent perinatal HIV transmission. This report describes preliminary trial results, which indicate that a short-term antenatal regimen of ZDV reduced the risk for perinatal transmission by ~half.
