Results indicated that it is possible to measure ammonium ion in simple solution (such as a Kjeldahl distillate) by transmission IR spectroscopy using commercial filter-based instrumentation such as the Multispec M1 infrared milk analyzer. If measurements are attempted in a diluted Kjeldahl digest, consideration would have to be given to ionic strength, displacement effects, dilution of ammonia, wavelength shifts and modifications to the basic methodology.
