Observations on the effects of exposure to methyl methacrylate on workers' health

The relationship between health of the workers and concentration of MMA in air have been observed in Beijing Glass Factory for eight years. The concentration was 100-200 mg/m3 (TWA) in the air of the polymerized and the prepolymerized processes (the high concentration group), and 11-33 mg/m3 in other processes (the low concentration group). Among 46-77 workers observed, the duration of employment was 3 months to 26 years and the age varied 21-60 years old. The result showed that the incidence of neurasthenia was 20-30%, Laryngitis is 50-60%, and hypotension is 9.2-26.3% among workers. The increase of hemoglobin and activity of cholinesterase, leukocytopenia and the decrease of serum cholesterol were also noted. All these changes showed a dose-repsonse relationship.
