A two-year study of female sex workers in Cameroon has shown that nonoxynol-9 (N-9) did not protect women from acquiring AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases. N-9 is the most common vaginal spermicide. An earlier study indicated that N-9 was effective against gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. However, those findings have been disproved by this large-scale study. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines recommend using N-9 with condoms.
