Splenic trauma in children

Splenic trauma is a fairly common intra-abdominal injury seen in children in Muhimbili Medical Centre. 13 patients seen in a one-year-period are analysed. Conservative management is increasingly being advocated in advanced. Medical Centres due to the occurrence of postsplenectomy infection but this requires good diagnostic and monitoring facilities and reliable blood bank, which are lacking in our set-up. With the available facilities, emergency splenectomy as the treatment of choice is emphasised in this report. There was no mortality in this series.
