Recent surveys on infant mortality, incidence of low birthweight, life expectancy at birth and food availability suggest a favourable and improving nutrition situation in Malaysia. However, protein-energy malnutrition, iron-deficiency anaemia and vitamin A deficiency are still prevalent. Endemic goitre is still found in inland areas. Chronic diseases associated with dietary excesses and increasing affluence are emerging as major health problems.
