In 1966, an AIDS control project helped the Kxoe community to develop HIV-1 and AIDS educational material. A linguist knowledgeable about the Kxoe language and culture worked with the Kxoe to develop innovative ways to explain sexual transmission and stages of HIV-1 disease. Symbolic drawings were used to form storyboards that could be easily interpreted by the non-literate community.
