A brief review is presented of the impacts on human health from indoor air pollution in developing countries. The scale of the problem is discussed, and the problems associated with developing solutions are noted. Although one of the most common solutions is the design of simple smokeless stoves, it is argued that perhaps a more constructive step would be to convince people of the dangers of breathing smoky air (including acute respiratory infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis, lower birth weights, cataracts, and nervous and muscular fatigue). A box presents a case study of the introduction of improved stoves, which have halved chest and eye diseases in Kenya.
