The clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory study of 2045 cases of mumps showed that parotiditis is not the only manifestation of the disease, in 47% of cases being accompanied simulatneously or successively by numerous other manifestations on the part of glands with external and internal secretion, and of the nervous system. In 2.75% of cases the parotid localization was preceded by other localizations, and in 0.75% the parotid was not affected. For these reasons mumps may considered not a parotiditis or only a parotiditis but rather an epidemic neurocrinitis, which expresses the tropism of the preferential localizations of virus: the nervous system and exo- endocrine glands.
