The epidemiology of colon cancer and dietary fat

The epidemiological literature is reviewed concerning the relation of dietary fat to colon cancer, including biochemical measurements of human fecal material. Specific attention is given to: correlational, case-control, and cohort epidemiological studies; and to human studies involving the association of fecal steroids and fecal mutagens with colon cancer. The inconsistency of the epidemiological evidence for dietary fat as a colon cancer risk factor and the need for further research studies also are discussed.
