We studied the respiratory functions in smokers and non-smokers under both supine and sitting positions. Sixty surgical patients without any histories of respiratory diseases were studied. The subdivisions of the lung volume, closing volume, diffusing capacity and spirometory were measured in smokers and non-smokers while they were in sitting and supine pisition. The results showed the following useful parameters of effects of smoking on respiratory functions. The measurements of closing volume (CV and CV/VC) and .ovrhdot.V25/HT were useful, but the measurement of forced vital capacity was not. In smokers the decrease of .ovrhdot.V25/HT and the increase of closing volume were enhanced in supine position. .ovrhdot.V25/HT correlated well with the changes of CC/TLC especially in supine position.
