This article, based on a publication for health planners from the Zambian Ministry of Health, reports that by the year 2000 or soon after, both life expectancy and gross domestic product in Zambia will fall significantly as a result of HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that between 300 and 400 people are newly infected by HIV every day in Zambia. Women are 1.4 times more likely than men to become infected with HIV
