It is shown that the employment of microcomputer technology in infusion equipment is associated with completely novel problems of safety, since this new component does not lend itself to the usual forms of testing used with conventional components. Using an injection pump as an example, it is shown how the safety problems associated with a microcomputer can be dealt with, and how the complex properties of the microcomputer can be convincingly utilized both economically and technically.
