An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a solid radioimmunoassay (RIA) for detection of Sm antibodies (anti-Sm) were developed. Polystyrene particles were incubated with serum of SLE patients. Bound anti-Sm antibodies were revealed by using radiolabeled or enzyme conjugated anti-human IgG; 13 of 58 patients with SLE contained anti-Sm antibodies as determined by hemagglutination. A higher positivity, was obtained by solid phase methods when anti-Sm activity was determined in 25 sera.
