In order to test the therapeutic efficacy and tolerability of an antihypertensive combination (100 mg atenolol, 25 mg chlorthalidone per tablet), 20 patients with supine diastolic pressure not lower than 100 mmHg were treated for four weeks with one tablet daily. The relevant clinical, instrumental and laboratory parameters were checked before, during and after this treatment. The hypotensive effect of the combination was found to be significant and tolerability was very satisfactory. Thus the logical justification of the combination of a beta-blocker with a diuretic agent was confirmed by clinical experience, without untoward side effects.
