This paper describes the development of a literacy and health education curriculum for adolescent girls in rural Malawi who will never enter formal schooling. The purpose of this description is to analyse the search process for a curriculum and to disseminate lessons learnt to others who are providing non-formal education services for adolescents and who seek to address critical reproductive health issues. This account of a curriculum under construction demonstrates how, along the way, both learners and curriculum providers have identified what needs to be taught. It is also revealed that the indicators of the education programme's impact on health-seeking practices cannot be determined in advance, or solely by outsiders.
