Studies in 20 patients with renal insufficiency confirmed that restriction of dietary protein slowed progression of the disease. The plasma creatinine doubling time was reached in 2 to 19 years in half the patients and instituting a low-protein diet when the plasma creatinine is 2 mg/100 ml or less is suggested. A 40-g protein diet to slow or halt progression of renal insufficiency, given for 5 days a week and supplemented for 2 non-consecutive days a week with the patient's normal diet when health is good, is proposed.
