We made a retrospective study on the therapeutic policy of resectable esophageal cancer located in the middle thoracic region. During the period from 1959 to 1982, a total of 427 cases received radical resection of the middle thoracic esophageal cancer. Among them, 381 cases were the subjects of the study, because they were identified histological stages of the cancer. The subjects were divided into two groups by stages. The group I included the patients, whose cancer stages were 0, I and II and the group II included the patients with stages III and IV. The study was made to reveal the outcome of the patients according to pre and post-operative combined therapy. The results were as follows: In stage 0, I and II, the outcome of the patients was not different between the patients with or without preoperative combined therapy. However, in stage III and IV, 5 and 10 year survival rates were better in the patients receiving preoperative combined therapy (than in the patient without preooperative combined therapy). As far as the effectiveness of preoperative combined therapy is concerned, the patients receiving RC, RCI and RCIH had better survival rates as 5, 6, 7 and 8 years postoperatively than the patients receiving radiation alone. Post-operative combined therapy for stages III and IV was effective, when T-shaped irradiation was performed for curative resection cases and radical irradiation was performed to the local region for non-curative resection cases.
