Some data from FAO trials in Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Niger are presented to demonstrate the role of N, P and K fertilizers in increasing crop yields as well as the interactions with organic manure, cultural practices, crop variety, climatic conditions and soil types. Human factors such as the technical level of farmers and the relationship between the economic environment and the use of fertilizers are examined.
