This paper outlines currently available options for the diagnosis and treatment of kala azar (visceral leishmaniasis) in India. Currently used diagnostic techniques include splenic or bone marrow aspiration, serodiagnostic tests (i.e., ELISA, direct agglutination test, immunochromatographic test), antigen detection, and DNA detection with polymerase chain reaction. Treatment options include the use of pentavalent antimonial compounds, pentamidine, liposomal amphotericin B, paromomycin, sitamaquine and miltefosine.
