Levels of various protein fractions (sarcoplasmic, myosin, actin, non collagen and collagen) and the rate of their degradation by proteases were studied in functionally different muscles of male albino rat subjected to exhaustive exercise. On prolonged exhaustion a greater decrease in sarcoplasmic protein fraction was observed as compared to the change in myofibrillar proteins. White vastus muscle showed the greatest depletion amongst the three muscles studied. This was correlated with the highest elevation of the acid, neutral and basic protease activities in the white vastus due to prolonged contractile activity.
