Brain-stem auditory evoked responses during activation of generalized paroxysmal discharges in man

Brain-stem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAERs) were studied at rest and during the whole activation-period in 10 epileptic patients whose Generalized Paroxysmal Discharges of spike-waves or multispike-waves at 3 to 5 c/s (GPDs) could be induced by intermittent photic stimulation or hyperpnoea. BAERs were also recorded during and after a menopause-related absence status in one additional patient. No significant differences was found between .hivin.XR (mean of interpeak latencies and amplitude ratios I/V of the BAERs recorded "at rest", after the menopause-related absence status) and .hivin.XA (mean of the same values of BAERs recorded during activation, during the menopause-related absence status). In contrast with other reports, the present study suggests that the polysynaptic pathways involved in transmitting the auditory message through the brain-stem are not significantly modified in concomitance with the appearance of GPDs on the scalp.
