Cancer of the esophagus. Retrospective study of 225 cases

Patients [225] presenting with eosophageal cancer were admitted to our surgical deparmtent [Trousseau Hospital, France] between 1972 and 1982. They form the basis of a retrospective study covering 135 aspects. We have, in particular, determined the percentages of patients managed by curative or palliative surgical treatment, the reasons for non-surgical or non-resecting management, and the pathological stages of the disease. The article considers the complications arising from resection procedures and the prognosis for different types of treatment. Since 1982, these data have been taken as the basis for a prospective study, the first results of which are described.
