Central processing of the peripheral spectrum of a vowel

Series of vowel-like stimuli were synthesized on a computer. They were taperecorded and presented in pairs to 5 subjects. A change in the portion of 1-formant impulses in a stimulus constructed as a series of 1- and 2 formant impulses (with equal formant amplitudes) had the same effect on identification as a change in the formant amplitudes in a 2-formant stimulus. The data obtained disagree with the hypothesis of the current phonemic classification of the dynamic spectrum of a stimuli.
