An empirical study of food insecurity in Ethiopia: the case of North Wello zone

This paper assesses the food insecurity situation in Ethiopia using household data obtained from a sample of 180 respondents from North Wello zone in February and March 1999. It also examines the causes of food insecurity and the recorded survival mechanisms of people. A food balance sheet (for the period 1994-98) and an aggregate household food security index have been constructed and the food insecurity causes have been studied using logit model. Empirical evidence suggests that the study area is highly food insecure and the insecurity depends on availability, entitlement and attitudinal variables. Possible areas of intervention to address the problem are also presented.
