It is predicted that between 1980 and 2000, employment outside private practice will increase by 61%, work in small animal practice by 31% and work in large animal practice by 23%. During this period the supply of veterinarians is predicted to increase by 73%. The surplus in veterinarians could cause a decline in the real income of private practitioners to 75% of the 1980 level. The growth in veterinary work and in the supply of veterinarians will vary from region to region. Decreasing the numbers of veterinary graduates by as much as 20%, beginning in 1990, would have little effect on the surplus of veterinarians by 2000 if the growth in demand for veterinary services did not increase above the levels predicted.
