Antenatal screening of small-for-gestational age infants by symphysial-fundal height measurement

Two hundred and fifty-seven pregnant women were screened for small-for-gestational age infants by serial symphysial-fundal height measurements which were performed as part of routine antenatal examination. There were 18 cases of SGA infants in this study, giving an incidence of 7.03 per cent. Eleven of the eighteen SGA infants were correctly diagnosed antenatally by this method which gave a sensitivity of 61 per cent. There were twenty patients predicted to have SGA infants, 9 of which were misdiagnosed giving a false positive of 45 per cent. The specificity of this method was 96 per cent. These results were somewhat better than the usual clinical prediction of SGA infant. Early and correct determination of gestational age, however, is essential when using this screening method. Further investigation of this method with larger sample size is recommended.
