Occupational yeast infection of the skin--an expert opinion

The case is reported of a 71-yr-old practising dentist who developed an erythrosquamous dermatitis of the nail portion of the right thumb. Candida parapsilosis was isolated. Treatment with ketoconazole for 3 weeks was successful. The clinical picture, nail alterations and prompt cure with ketoconazole suggest that the case was very probably one of primary infection by C. parapsilosis, possibly due to lowered skin immunity as a result of exposure of the right hand to X-rays.
