The pancreatic cholera syndrome is a serious and potentially fatal disease found in patients with endocrine pancreatic tumors and ganglioneuromas. Two patients with therapy-resistant pancreatic cholera syndrome were successfully treated with human leukocyte interferon given i.m. in a dose of 3 .times. 106-6 .times. 106 IU/day. This produced a reduction in stool volume and plasma vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) within 3-5 days of the start of treatment. Tumor mass decreased in 1 patient after 3 mo. of treatment but some tumor tissue remained after 15 mo. observation, although circulating concentrations of VIP were normal. The mechanisms of interferon action are not known but a direct inhibition of tumor-cell hormone production and perhaps of tumor cell proliferation might account for the rapid clinical response.
