Adult heartworms were removed from the right ventricle and pulmonary artery in 9 dogs by means of cardiopulmonary bypass. None of the dogs had clinical signs of heartworm infection prior to surgery; the surgical procedure was performed solely to determine its practicability. Eight of 9 dogs survived and were free of microfilariae 3 to 5 months after surgery. Drug therapy was not used at any time. The right side of the heart and pulmonary artery of all dogs were free of adult heartworms at euthanasia 6 months after the operation.
