Central pontine myelinolysis on alcoholism: report of an autopsy case

A 46-yr-old heavy drinker, diagnosed neuropathologically as central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) was reported. Typical pathological finding of pontine lesion was seen. Before death its clinical manifestations were few. The stage of onset of CPM should be pinpointed. The patient died under hyponatremia despite the fact that he was given treatment for the correction of serum electrolyte. This report is the opposite of the hypothesis of Noreberg et al explaining the etiopathogenesis of CPM with excessive rise of serum Na. Each CPM in the reference happened under the various conditions of alcoholism. But all of the cases cannot be included under the heading of alcoholic CPM.
