Epidemiological considerations in planning human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine trials, which include identification and strengthening of potential sites for trials, efficient transition from phase I to phase III trials, identification of populations with high HIV incidence for phase III trials, HIV genetic subtypes and planning of efficacy trials, recruitment and retention of volunteers and ethical considerations, are discussed.
