This article summarizes data on the prevalence of and risk factors (sociodemographic and behavioural) for sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) obtained from 118 female commercial sex workers (CSWs; aged 16-50 years) in Gujarat, India who were surveyed between February and September 2000. Results indicate that STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhoea, Chlamydia trachomatis infection, Trichomonas vaginalis infection, and human immunodeficiency virus infection, are prevalent among female CSWs in Gujarat, highlighting the need for urgent STD control measures for this high-risk population.
