In 18 children with chronic, nonspecific diarrhoea, a prospective evaluation was made to estimate "basal" fat consumption and the response of their diarrhoea to diets containing 25% or 50% of total energy as fat. In the observation period, before the start of any alteration in dietary fat content, diarrhoea subsided. Only 5 of the 18 patients had a low fat intake (less than 27% of total energy) at the outset of the study and spontaneous resolution of the diarrhoea precluded an assessment of the effect of altering fat intake on stool frequency.
