Hospice care: an opportunity for dietetic services

Data are presented to familiarize dietitians with the types of US hospice programs, standards, and services, and the dietitians role in this rapidly-growing area of health care. The implications are that hospices will offer new career opportunities for dietitians. Human nutrition, dietetics, food service, and food and nutrition degrees coupled with social work, counseling, nursing, and health administration skills are recommended as particularly useful for a career in the hospice field due to its interdisciplinary requirements.
