The cytomorphology of the neurosecretory cells (NSC) in the thoracic ganglia of a penaeid prawn, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius), was studied, using the chrome alum haematoxylin fuchsin, aldehyde fuchsin, resorcin fuchsin and azan staining techniques. Three NSC groups.sbd.ventral (Tv), dorsal (Td) and lateral (T1) were principally identified. The lateral group was capable of further division into an anterolateral (Ta1) and posterolateral (Tp1) subgroup. The existence of subgroups in only the lateral half of this ganglion, and the absence of medial groups, may be related to species specificity. Three types of NSC.sbd.A, B, C.sbd.differing in respect of their cytomorphic characteristics, as well as their staining properties, were observed. Despite the limited distribution of the individual types, three categories of cells were observed in all the groups. Evidence of both peripheral and axonal transport of neurosecretory material was obtained.
