The 1997 Flood Vulnerability Mapping Pilot Project is investigating the technical and financial feasibility of using RADARSAT data to assess water damage to rice crops by comparing imagery taken before, during and after flooding of cultivated areas. The pilot project was divide into two distinct phases: Phase I - Flood vulnerability Mapping and Phase II - Rice Crop Monitoring. This progress report outlines the activities undertaken during Phase I, which are aimed at providing a reasonable estimate of the areas damaged by flooding. The objectives of the Phase II are to explore whether the approach can give an indication of regional cropping patterns.
