Decline in the prevalence of Echninococcus granulosus in dogs in Lodwar, Turkana, Kenya between 1981 and 1983: its causes and significance

A fall in the prevalence of Echinococcus granulosus in dogs in Lodwar (from 9 in 62 to 0 in 57) was observed between 1981 and 1983. It is postulated that this decline had started earlier as a result of the process of urbanization. Studies on the role of the dog suggest that the main factors involved were the keeping of dogs from choice rather than necessity, with consequently fewer, better cared for dogs and the centralization of livestock slaughter, with meat inspection and disposal of condemned items.
