Twenty-two patients with hair-cell leukemia were investigated. It was found that their non-specific antiinfectious defense was significantly lowered: in the presence of heavy granulo- and monocytopenia, a decrease was noted in the levels of lysozyme and .beta.-lysines and in the phagocytic and digestive activity of neutrophils. The content of the main Ig classes in the blood serum was frequently over the normal. Among the lymphocytes the percentage of cells carrying Ig and binding mouse red cells was close to the normal, while that of sheep red cell-RFC was lowered. Splenectomy did not induce deterioration of the antiinfectious defense system.
