The authors have described 5 variants of atherosclerotic affection of the femoropopliteal area, based on analysis of the clinical findings related to 234 patients 182 of whom were subjected to reconstructive surgery. Disseminated occlusions and occlusions of the popliteal artery are marked by the most unfavourable course. Profundoplasty is the operation of choice in disseminated occlusion. Transcutaneous transluminal angioplasty is recommended in cases of high-risk operations and in isolated occlusion of the superficial femoral artery. Autovenous by-pass should be performed in isolated affection of the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries.
