The chromosomes of Orthopodomyia pulchripalpis (the only European representative of the tribe Orthopodomyiini) are described. The chromosome complement consists of 3 pairs of metaphase chromosomes, as do other members of the subfamily Culicinae. However, the polytene chromosomes are of better cytological quality than those of most culicine mosquitoes and are easily obtained from the larval salivary glands. A photomap of the polytene chromosomes of this species is described, together with details on chromosomal polymorphism.
