Perinatal outcome in hypertensive disease of pregnancy

220 infants born to hypertensive mothers were analysed retrospectively. 43 infants were born to essential hypertensive mothers, 156 to pre-eclamptic toxemia (PET) and 21 to eclamptic mothers. 39 infants (20.2%) delivered prematurely (gestation < 37 wks), 81 infants (36.4%) were low birth weight (< 2500 g) and 45 infants (23.3%) were small-for-dates. The incidence of cesarean section was found to be significantly high (P < 0.01) in hypertensive mothers. Perinatal mortality rate was over two fold in hypertensive group, 4 times in toxemic and 20 times in mothers with eclampsia as compared to control mothers.
