Infective endocarditis on the native valve. Long-term prospective follow-up of 101 cases

A prospective series of 101 cases of infective endocarditis on native heart valves in 95 patients is reported. Twnety-six patients required surgical operation during the acute phase of the disease. Overall mortality during the acute phase was 17 cases (17%); 9 of them belonged to the group receiving combined surgical and medical therapy and 8 to the group receiving only medical therapy. At the end of follow-up (ranging from 3 months to 9 years; mean 44 months) 26% of the patients had died, 56% had received prosthetic valves and only 29% remained symptom-free and with mild valvular disease.
