It has been estimated that 8 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with the AIDS virus and that, in some Central and East African cities, one in every three adults is infected. This book contains 33 chapters which describe and summarize the primary biomedical, epidemiologic, and the problems connected with AIDS which researchers and health officials must contend with in Africa. the work is divided into 6 sections including an overview of HIV, epidemiology, clinical manifestations and treatments, preventive strategies, the social and economic impact of AIDS on Africa, and geographic variations.
