Infection by delta agent in drug addicts

Serum samples from 123 drug addicts living in 3 different geographical areas were studied to evaluate the diffusion of .delta. agent among i.v. drug abusers in this country. Of them, 102 were carriers of HBsAg [hepatitis B surface antigen] and 21 were carriers of anti-HBs [hepatitis B surface antibody]. Anti-.delta. antibodies were measured by radioimmunoassay in all cases. The prevalence of anti-.delta. antibodies in HBsAg-positive addicts was 39%; it was 9.5% in anti-HBs-positive addicts. A high rate of infection by .delta. agent is evident among this particular community, which has become its major reservoir.
