Megacolon was found in 9 of 22 mummified bodies from Chile dated between 470 BC and 600 AD. 2 had cardiomegaly and one megaoesophagus. The evidence strongly suggests that Trypanosoma cruzi infection was present in man in northern Chile before 500 BC, and that its endemicity was related to establishment of a sedentary way of life.
