Cerebral vascular accidents are the third commonest cause of death in the western world, after heart disease and cancer. Although they occur at any age, the risk greatly increases as we get older and, as life expectancy is increasing in all countries, cerebral vascular accidents are becoming commoner. In addition to being a major cause of death, stroke is the single most common cause of chronic disability, the care of which requires considerable financial resources, both to the individual patient, who suffers loss of earning power, to his family, and to the state. This paper reviews the many different drugs that are used in stroke and points out their advantages and disadvantages.
