Knowledge, attitude and practice of parturients regarding Epidural Analgesia for labour in a university hospital in Karachi

A study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan during November-December 2003. A total of 448 pregnant women scheduled for delivery were interviewed. Although 76% were aware of epidural analgesia as a means of relieving pain during labour, only 19% availed of epidural analgesia. 40% of the women had heard of epidural analgesia from their obstetricians and 64% from friends or relatives. 20% of the women believed that epidural analgesia has detrimental effects on the baby and 9% believed that it can prolong the duration of labour.
