AIDS in women is a separate epidemic as they constitute nearly half of the AIDS cases worldwide. 130 HIV positive females aged 15 and above attending the Skin and VD Department of Medical College in Baroda, Gujarat, India were enrolled. Their clinico-epidemiological profiles were compared with 100 HIV positive males. Majority of females were in the age group of 21-35 years (64.5%) and most of the males and females were married. Major mode of transmission was via sexual route (74% in males and 56% in females). Females took blood transfusion mainly for anaemia and pregnancy whereas in males the major indication was surgery and anaemia. In STD, genital discharge was more common in females (26%) and genital ulcer disease was more common in males (35%). Both HIV positive males and females had nearly the same clinical symptoms except for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and oesophageal candidosis which were more common in the latter.
